9th February 2024 - Cut Hill Incised Crosses

A new page has been added for two incised crosses to be found on the summit Cut Hill.

 

19th January 2024 - Shorter Cross

An accurate grid reference and new main and thumbnail photos have been added to the Shorter Cross, to show the relief/incised Cross on each side of its head.

 

19th January 2024 - Week Down Cross

6th November 2023 - Crapstone Memorial Cross

A new page has been added for the Crapstone Memorial Cross, which stands on The Green, Stoke Hill Lane, Crapstone.

 

4th November 2023 - Buckland Monachorum Churchyard Cross

An accurate Grid Reference, Main Photo, four Thumbnails plus information about Lady Modyford's Hall has been added to the page for the Buckland Monachorum Churchyard Cross.

 

4th November 2023 - Welltown No. 2 Cross

A new thumbnail photo and further information has been added to the page for the Welltown No. 2 Cross.

 

25th September 2023 - Welltown No. 2 Cross

A new page has been added for the Welltown No. 2 Cross, which has a cross incised into the top of the stone and stands beside the small stream on the approach to Welltown from Yennadon Cross.

 

25th September 2023 - Newleycombe Cross

A paragraph has been added to the page for the Newleycombe Cross, to record that it has been dismantled and reinforced by the DNP in 2023.

 

22nd September 2023 - Bridestowe Memorial Cross

A new page has been added for the Bridestowe Memorial Cross, which stands just inside the Fore Street Churchyard wall.

 

26th June 2023 - Walkhampton Memorial Cross

A new photo has been added to the Walkhampton Memorial Cross, together with an updated Grid Reference.

 

24th June 2023 - Horrabridge Incised and Memorial Crosses

New photos have been added to the Horrabridge Incised and Horrabridge Memorial Crosses, together with updates to the Grid References and wording.

19th September 2022 - Buckfastleigh Churchyard Memorial Cross

The wording for the Buckfastleigh Churchyard Memorial Cross has now been updated and new photos have been added to the page.

 

3rd August 2022 - Whitchurch Churchyard & Memorial Crosses

New pages have been added for the Whitchurch Churchyard Cross, which stands in an ancient socket stone, and the Whitchurch War Memorial Cross which also stands in the churchyard. 

 

2nd August 2022 - Mount Kelly School Cross

A new page has been added for a War Memorial Cross standing in the grounds of Mount Kelly School.

The page for the Traveller's Ford Cross has been updated with a new photo and slightly amended measurements.

 

7th November 2021 - Blackaton Bridge Cross

The page for the Blackaton Bridge Cross, near Gidleigh, has been updated with new photos and a write-up of the nearby Venville Stone. 

 

4th November 2021 - Bishop's Stone - Lustleigh

The page for the Bishop's Stone, at Lustleigh, has been updated to attribute the coat of arms, inscribed on the front of the stone, to Bishop Cotton. 

 

1st November 2021 - Badger's Holt Incised Cross

A new page has been added for a cross incised onto a boulder in the riverbed of the East Dart River at Badger's Holt, Dartmeet. 

 

30th October 2021 - Holne Churhyard Cross Shaft

A new page has been added for a length of cross shaft sited in the Holne Churchyard.

 

30th October 2021 - Leather Tor Cross

The measurements of the Leather Tor Cross have now been added to the web page.

 

25th September 2021 - Penn Beacon Cross

A new page has been added for an incised cross on a boulder just to the south of Penn Beacon.

 

24th September 2021 - Traveller's Ford Cross

A new page has been added for a little metal cross mounted in a boulder in the Traveller's Ford area.

 

24th September 2021 - Leather Tor Cross

A new page has been added for a little metal cross mounted on a boulder in the Leather Tor area.

 

21st September 2021 - South Tawton Lychgate Cross

A new page has been added for the South Tawton Lychgate Cross, which is incised into the upper surface of the coffin stone.

 

21st September 2021 - Zeal Head Cross

A new cross, the Zeal Head Cross, has now been added to the site marking the place where an ancient waymarking cross once stood.

 

22nd August 2021 - Crazywell Farm Cross

The text for the Crazywell Farm Cross has been been updated to downgrade the stone to a possible cross and to also show a possible link to the Crazywell Cross.

 

22nd August 2021 - Bude Lane Cross

The page for the Bude Lane Cross has now been been updated with a photo and a paragraph of a possible section of cross shaft, sited at Tongue End Cross, Belstone.

 

21st August 2021 - Teigncombe Socket Stone

The page for the Teigncombe Socket Stone has now been been updated with some new photos, amended text and an accurate grid reference.

 

21st August 2021 - Leigh Bridge Cross

The Leigh Bridge Cross, has now been been updated with some new photos and amended text.

 

20th August 2021 - Shaugh Prior Crosses

A new cross, the Shaugh Prior Memorial, has now been added to the site, together with updates to the Shaugh Prior Village and Churchyard Crosses.

 

20th August 2021 - Beatland Corner Socket Stone

The page for the Beatland Corner Socket Stone has been updated with an accurate grid reference and some new photos.

19th August 2021 - Cornwood Village Cross

The page for the Cornwood Village Cross has been updated with some new photos for both the cross and other interesting features around the square.

 

18th August 2021 - Cornwood Memorial Cross

The page for the Cornwood Memorial Cross has been updated, to include the measurements of the cross, together with its socket, as well as some new photos being added for both the cross and other interesting features on the church.

 

18th August 2021 - Hennock Memorial Cross

The page for the Hennock Memorial Cross has been updated, to include the measurements of the cross, together with its socket, as well as some new photos being added.

 

9th May 2021 - Hennock Memorial Cross

A new page has been added for the Hennock Memorial Cross which stands as a memorial to those men, of both Hennock and the nearby Teign Village, who lost their lives in World Wars I and II.  This cross marks a new milestone for our website, as it is the 200th cross that has its own page posted to the site. 

 

16th January 2021 - Crazywell Farm Cross Shaft

A new page has been added for the Crazywell Farm Cross Shaft which was last used as a gate post for the, now abandoned, Crazywell Farm.  

 

3rd November 2020 - Harford Churchyard Cross Head

A new page has been added for the Harford Churchyard Cross Head which is the head and one arm of a cross placed in the Harford Churchyard for safekeeping.

 

30th October 2020 - Three Barrows Cross

The Three Barrows Cross has been updated to include a resin cross that has appeared beside the Redlake Tramway, below Three Barrows, during the period of lockdown in 2020.  If anyone has any further information on this, or the two other resin crosses in the area, perhaps you could contact us by email from our link on the home page: http://www.dartmoor-crosses.org.uk/.

 

22nd August 2020 - Big Whit Hill Cross

A new page has been added for the Big Whit Hill Cross, which is a large recumbent and abandoned cross on the flank of Big Whit Hill, to the south west of Cosdon. 

 

29th December 2019 - Northmore's Cross

A replacement cross has now been provided to replace the missing original of Northmore's Cross.

 

19th November 2019 - Drywell's and Venton Crosses

Some new photos have been added to the pages for both the Drywell's and Venton Crosses.  The wording for the Drywell's Cross has also been updated.

 

5th November 2019 - Bagga Tor Incised Cross

A new page has been added for the Bagga Tor Cross incised into one of the summit rocks of Bagga Tor

 

16th September 2019 - Manaton Memorial Cross

A new page has been added for the Manaton Memorial Cross sited inside the lych gate to the Manaton Churchyard. 

 

4th September 2019 - Chagford Primary School Cross

The Chagford C of E Primary School Cross page has been updated to show the measurements and a more accurate grid reference for the cross. 

 

4th September 2019 - Leigh Bridge Cross

The webpage for the Leigh Bridge Cross has been updated to reflect the fact that a new replica cross was been placed on site, in July 2019, to replace the original cross that had become very weak, snapped off at the base of the shaft and fallen from its position high up on the rocks. 

 

21st August 2019 - Okehampton Memorial Cross

A new paragraph has been added to the Okehampton Memorial Cross in recognition of a medieval stone cross that once stood in the town centre, now marked by a pavement tablet. 

 

14th April 2019 - Ashburton Memorial Cross

A new page has now been added for the Asburton Memorial Cross, sited on the junction of East Street and Dolbeare Road, Ashburton 

 

14th March 2019 - Little Cross

A new page has now been added for the Little Cross, sited on the bank at the entrance to Little Cross Cottage, Holne.

 

30th July 2018 - Venton Chapel

A new page has now been added for the Venton Chapel Cross, sited to the rear of Venton House, Widecombe-in-the-Moor.

 

18th July 2018 - Chagford C. of E. Primary School

A new page has now been added for the Chagford C. of E. Primary School Cross, sited at the vehicular entrance to the new school.

 

10th July 2018 - Ivybridge Mosaic Cross

The page for the Ivybridge Mosaic Cross has been updated to show a photo of the new replacement cross, together with a thumbnail photo of the original cross.

 

20th February 2018 - Buckland Abbey Cross Shaft

A new page has been added for the Buckland Abbey Cross Shaft, set up in the garden of the former abbey.

 

27th November 2017 - Cholwich Town and Shaugh Prior Churchyard Crosses 

The page for the Cholwich Town Farm Cross has been updated with new photos and provided with accurate grid references.  The wording for the Shaugh Prior Churchyard Cross has been updated to include a photo and the details of a (relatively) recently sited roadside cross in the village. 

 

7th November 2017 - Cornwood Memorial Cross

A new page has been added for the Cornwood Memorial Cross in the parish churchyard.

 

7th September 2017 - Canonteign & Fulford Crosses

Two new pages have been added for the Canonteign Cross and the Fulford Cross in the Dunsford Churchyard. 

 

6th August 2017 - Buckland Church & Buckland Manor Crosses

Both the Buckland Churchyard and the Buckland Manor Crosses have been updated with some new photos, accurate Grid References and additions to the wording of the information about the crosses.

 

4th July 2017 - Riddon Ridge Incised & Bude Lane Crosses

The photos on the Riddon Ridge Cross page have been replaced with newer ones. Further information has been added to the Bude Lane Cross.

 

4th June 2017 - Tavistock Memorial, Down St Mary and Chagford Memorial Crosses

New pages have been added for the Tavistock Memorial Cross that stands in Bedford Square, Tavistock and the cross in Down St Mary Churchyard.  A new thumbnail photo has been added to the Chagford Memorial Cross page. 

 

4th June 2017 - Horndon Cross Socket Stone

A new page has now been added for the Horndon Cross Socket Stone at the road junction in the village.

 

3rd June 2017 - North Brentor Memorial Cross

A new page has now been added for the North Brentor Memorial Cross in the centre of the village.

 

2nd June 2017 - Lydford Memorial, Belstone Incised, Mary Tavy & Peter Tavy Crosses

The measurements of the Lydford War Memorial Cross have been add to this page.  The Grid Reference and two updated thumbnail photos have been added to the Belstone Incised Cross.  Both the Mary Tavy Village Cross and the Peter Tavy Village Cross have had accurate Grid References added, together with some new thumbnail photos.

 

16th April 2017 - Southcott Cross

The wording of the Southcott Cross has been updated and a photo of the incised figure on the reverse face of the cross (courtesy of Bob Noakes) has posted up.

 

13th April 2017 - Princetown Churchyard Cross

The Princetown Churchyard Cross has been updated with a new main photo, together with 3 new thumbnail photos and a more accurate grid reference.

 

3rd April 2017: Sinclair Cross

A new page has now been added for the Sinclair Memorial Cross beside the Prison Leat.

 

2nd April 2017: Huntingdon Warren Cross

The reason for the Huntingdon Warren Cross being placed out on the moor has now been added to this page.

 

5th March 2017: Shaugh Prior Cross & Browney Socket Stone

A thumbnail photo together with some information on a new cross in the village has been added to the Shaugh Prior Cross page.  The page for the Browney Cross has been updated to include a thumbnail photo of a plaque and some further information about the cross which was once sited here. 

 

4th March 2017: Southcott, Moon's, Oxenham, Ringhole Copse and Addiscott Crosses

The page for the Southcott Cross has been updated with new photos and an accurate Grid Reference.  The Moon's Cross page also has a new photo and the measurements of the shaft have been added. Updated photos and accurate Grid References have been added to the Oxenham, Ringhole Copse and Addiscott Crosses.

5th September 2016: Cornwood Village Cross

A thumbnail photo has been added of the Sir Frederic Rogers plaque in the Ivybridge Parish Church and the wording of the Cornwood Village Cross amended accordingly.

 

4th September 2016: Ivybridge Churchyard, Ivybridge Mosaic & Ivybridge Town Crosses

            New pages have been added for the Ivybridge Churchyard Cross, Ivybridge Mosaic Cross and the Ivybridge Town Cross which have all been visited recently.

 

30th April 2016: Swallerton Gate

Another stone has recently been found in the garden of the property at Swallerton Gate, which looks very much like an ancient wayside cross.  This stone is currently being investigated and will be posted as a page to our website as and when it has been verified as a cross.

 

28th April 2016: Longstone Manor Socket Stone & Narrator Farm Incised Cross

            New pages have been added for the Longstone Manor Socket Stone and the Narrator Farm Incised Cross which have now been visited in the area of the Burrator Reservoir.

 

6th January 2016: Southcott Cross

            Further to the news item of 17th April 2015 (below), I'm pleased to report that the Southcott Cross has now been repaired and is back on site.

 

30th September 2015: Hayford Socket Stone

A new page has been added for the Hayford Socket Stone which has been found recently near the moor track at Lud Gate.

 

30th June 2015: Leigh Bridge Cross

The Leigh Bridge Cross is currently missing from site. It fell from its position on top of the boulder during the winter of 2013/14 and is currently being held in storage by the Dartmoor National Park Authority until a decision on how best it might be repaired and restored to site has been made.

17th April 2015: Southcott Cross
I went to revisit the Southcott Cross on 17th April and found that it was missing from its normal position in the corner of the garden of Southcott Cross Cottage. The corner of the wall was boarded up, with a sticker being displayed by English Heritage to say that the cross has temporarily been removed for repair.  There was no indication of how long the repair might take or when the cross might be returned to its rightful place. 

31st March 2015: Renamed Cross
The Two Crosses Cross, near Dunsford, has now been renamed 'Dunsford Two Crosses Cross' to avoid any confusion with the Widecombe Two Crosses Cross, listed below.

A new page has been added for the Widecombe Two Crosses Cross inscribed stone.

30th November 2014: New Cross
A new page has been added for the cross mounted on the top of the Hooker Fountain in Princetown.

A new page has been added for a cross incised on a rock beside the Shavercombe Brook.

A new page has been added for the incised cross and 'IHS' inscription on Middle Puper's Rock.

14th June 2013: Two new crosses
New pages have been added for the Nodden and Stoneslade Crosses.  The cross at Hurdwick Farm has also been added recently.

26th August 2010: Burham Farm Socket Stone
We have just received news that the socket stone at Burham Farm has gone missing. Thanks to Karen Lightowler for bringing this to our attention. Karen and her family have been visiting Dartmoor crosses when on holiday in Devon in recent years and says that the "indent where the socket stone stood is quite overgrown so presumably it was moved some time ago." If anyone has any information we would be grateful to hear from you.

A new link has been added for the Dartmoor Archive. This is a digitisation project based at Exeter University, which aims to digitally preserve Dartmoor-related photographs. It is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Dartmoor Trust and the Dartmoor National Park Authority.

21st February 2004: Unfinished cross
A new page has been added for the cross at Hanger Farm. Thanks to Steve and Jackie Beale for putting us on to this 'unfinished' cross.

31st January 2004: A new cross for 2004
A new page has been added for Gisperdown Cross. Thanks to Les Sutton for bringing the whereabouts of this cross head to our attention.

6th September 2003: A sad tale

20th August 2003: We're back!

16th May 2002: Three more crosses?
New pages have been added for the incised cross at Riddon Ridge and the crosses at Lower Aish Farm (Poundsgate) and Laughter Tor. We have very little background information on either the purpose or the origin of these crosses, so any additional information will be welcome.

14th April 2002: Information found!
The following appears in the 'News from the National Park' section of the Dartmoor Magazine (issue 66):-
'A new cross base to replace the one that mysteriously disappeared near Greenwell Farm has been replicated. Using old sketches and photographs the National Park Authority's mason has cut and dressed a new base from a granite boulder supplied by Greenwell Farm.'

9th April 2002: Information needed
Can you help? We have made several unsuccessful attempts to find the socket stone at Greenwell Gert. However, the stone is well documented and details appear in almost all of our source reference books. Does anyone know where it is or what has happened to it?

25th March 2002: A walk for Easter?
Our suggestion for a circular walk around a pleasant corner of West Devon, starting at the Burra Tor Reservoir. The walk includes up to 9 crosses featured on our website. So if you are able, get your boots on and give it a try - we enjoyed it ourselves, but we would appreciate your feedback.

25th February 2002: Congratulations and thanks
to the Dartmoor Rescue Group - Plymouth Section, on behalf of all who took part in the 12 Across, 2 Down Walk from Venford to Princetown last Sunday 24th February. 11th February 2001: Dartmoor Crosses Century
At long last! The following new additions at Cholwich Town Farm and Harford brings our tally of crosses on the website to the magical 100!

PLEASE NOTE: Like everyone else, we will be staying off the moor until this dreadful Foot and Mouth outbreak is over. 
However, we still have a number of crosses that were visited and photographed during January and February which we will be adding to the site over the coming weeks. 
So, although you can't get out there to see them for yourself, we hope that you will find a 'virtual' trip to our crosses enjoyable.

31st December 2000: Crosses at Meavy Church
A new page has been added to the site with information and photos of the ancient crosses at Meavy Church.

19th December 2000: New Cross for the New Year
We have received exciting news about the restoration of the village cross at Peter Tavy. There will be a short ceremony at midday on 1st January 2001, following which we hope to have a photo and more information - watch this space!

29th November 2000: A Crosses Walk
The Dartmoor Rescue Group, Plymouth Section, has organised a 'Twelve Across Two Down' walk for Sunday 25th February which visits fourteen crosses on the moor. Further details and an on-line booking form can be found at the DRG website.
